Ogasawara Islands Ogasawara Islands

The Ogasawara Islands, which are more than 1,000 km away from central Tokyo, are a collective name for more than 30 islands. There are no airports on the inhabited islands of Chichijima and Hahajima, and it takes about 24 hours by the liner, which operates about once a week from Takeshiba Pier, a passenger terminal at Tokyo Port. The Ogasawara Islands, which have never been connected to the continent, are home to many independently evolved plants and animals, and are also famous as the largest breeding area for green turtles in Japan. The islands’ unique ecosystem has been recognized worldwide. In 2011, the Ogasawara Islands were registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
