Asakusa is an area centered around Sensoji Temple, one of Japan’s most famous tourist attractions and the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The giant Kaminarimon red lantern, which stands 3.9 meters high, 3.3 meters wide, and weighs about 700 kilograms, is a symbol of the Asakusa area. Nakamise-dori St. on the approach to the temple is lined with many stalls and souvenir shops. Within walking distance of Sensoji Temple, there is Kappabashi Kitchenware Town®, which has a wide range of shops selling Japanese kitchen/cooking utensils, such as knives, tableware, and pots, and the Edo Taito Traditional Crafts Center, which has a permanent exhibition of more than 250 traditional crafts from about 48 industries.
